Research - PAPILLOMA VIRUSES

Rous discovery regarding the oncogenic potential of animal viruses was agreed challenge. At the end of years 80, the hypothesis concerning the involvement of papiloma viruses in the emergence of some animal/human cancers arises. In this context, Liviu Popa introduced the molecular study of HPV at the “Stefan S. Nicolau” Institute of Virology. His works were continued and developed by Rodica Repanovici and Mihai Stoian.

Nowadays, in the Department of Viral Genetic Engineering, the projects on HPV are focused on studies concerning:

the molecular mechanisms viral oncogenesis
individual susceptibility for this viral infection
mechanisms underlying deregulate viral oncogenes expression
cloning and expression of viral proteins and development of chimeric proteins

The published papers focused on HPV infection in Romania, won the “Stefan S. Nicolau” Romanian Academy Prize.
